Granicus Insights

Participants

Every person who has participated in your GovDelivery Interactive Text campaign is represented as a Participant. This includes people who have responded to your surveys, as well as those you have uploaded. Participants can be assigned to Groups for targeted messaging or surveying.

Participant Pages

Every participant has his or her own Participant page, which you can access by clicking on their phone number anywhere in GovDelivery Interactive Text.

On a Participant's page, you can send them a Private Message, as well as change their Subscription Status (unless they unsubscribed by keyword – more info here). You'll also find a variety of information on that Participant:

  • Their Name
  • Their Subscription Status
  • Their Poll responses
  • Which Messages they have received
  • Private Messages you've exchanged with them (if any)
  • Calls and voicemails from the participant
  • Which Groups they are a member of

Participant Details

Name

GovDelivery Interactive Text allows you to match a person's name to their phone number, for easier communication and personalized messaging. There are two ways to assign a name to Participants. Once a name has been assigned, you can insert the name into messages or Poll questions using a dynamic tag.

Adding Names via Upload

When uploading a list of phone numbers to your campaign using the Groups system, your upload can include a name belonging to each phone number. The names will be automatically assigned to the participants during the upload. For more information, see Creating & Editing Groups.

Adding Names via the Name Question Type

The Name question type can be used in a poll to used to ask participants for their names, and will automatically match respondents' names to their phone numbers. This is the best way to assign names to participants who you did not upload, but who engaged with your Campaign by texting in to an inbound poll.

Including Participant Names in Polls and Messages

You can insert the tag "name" in questions or messages to automatically include participants' names. If no name is present for some participants, the name tag will be excluded for those participants.

Note: The name tag is case-sensitive, so the word "name" in brackets must be lowercase in order for the name tag to work.

Phone Numbers

To prevent accidental publishing of private phone numbers, the last 4 digits of a Participant's phone number are hidden by default, e.g. "(215) 720-XXXX".

To enable full phone number viewing for your GovDelivery Interactive Text account, or if you need access to a specific phone number for troubleshooting or contacting them outside of GovDelivery Interactive Text, please contact Granicus support.

Subscription

Subscription Status

Any Participant who texts in to one of your Campaigns or is uploaded to a Group is considered subscribed, and is opted-in to receive outgoing messages from that Campaign.

Participants can unsubscribe at any time by texting QUIT, STOP, or END to any phone number associated with your Campaign. You can also unsubscribe participants manually from your GovDelivery Interactive Text dashboard. A Participant who has unsubscribed will not receive any messages from you, even if they are in a Group that you send a Message or Poll to. A Participant who has unsubscribed can re-subscribe anytime by texting START to any phone number associated with your GovDelivery Interactive Text Campaign.

To check or change a specific Participant's subscription status, click on their phone number anywhere in GovDelivery Interactive Text to browse to their Participant Page. There, you can manually unsubscribe a participant by clicking the "Subscribed" switch. You can also re-subscribe someone you've manually unsubscribed; however you cannot re-subscribe someone who unsubscribed by texting STOP, QUIT, or END.

Re-subscribe a Participant

You can re-subscribe a Participant, but only if they were manually unsubscribed through the GovDelivery Interactive Text interface. Participants who unsubscribed by texting a standard unsubscribe Keyword (STOP, END, QUIT) must resubscribe themselves by texting START to any number associated with your Campaign.

To resubscribe a participant who was manually unsubscribed:

  1. Browse to their Participant page by clicking on their phone number anywhere in your Campaign.
  2. Click the Unsubscribed switch at the top right. You will be asked to confirm that you have permission to resubscribe that participant.
  3. The Participant will be resubscribed and the subscription switch will change to Subscribed.

Unsubscribe a Participant

There are three places where you can manually unsubscribe a Participant from your Campaign:

  1. In any Group: find their name/number in a Group, and click the arrow icon at the far right of their row. Then click Unsubscribe this participant.
  2. In any Poll Response list: at the far right of the response table, click the arrow icon and select Unsubscribe this participant.
  3. On their Participant Page: Browse to the Participant's Page and click on the Subscribed switch at the top right. The switch will change to Unsubscribed.

You may need to manually unsubscribe a Participant if:

  • They tried to unsubscribe, but misspelled QUIT, STOP or any of the other unsubscribe Keywords.
  • They included extra words/characters with their unsubscribe Keyword (e.g. "Stop." or "Quit texting me").
  • They are confused or unaware of how to unsubscribe.

You can also resubscribe a Participant you previously unsubscribed by clicking the switch again. This will only work for participants you manually unsubscribed, not those who unsubscribed by Keyword.

Tokens

Tokens in GovDelivery Interactive Text enable you to assign specific tags to your Participants, in addition to their names and phone numbers. With Tokens, you can assign any information you want: give each of your participants a unique ID number, associate the names of their case workers or district representatives, and more.

Unlike Participant Names, which can be assigned through the Name question type or during upload, Tokens currently can only be set using our API (Application Programmer Interface). See our  API documentation for more info. Full support of Tokens in the online GovDelivery Interactive Text interface is coming soon.

Once Tokens have been assigned to participants, you can use them in messages using the token name surrounded by double curly brackets. For example, you could create the tokens VOTING-LOCATION and VOTING-DATE, and set the contents based on your participants' reported ZIP codes. Then you could use these tokens to send customized voting reminders.

Example: "Hi
{{name}}
, don't forget to vote on
{{VOTING-DATE}}
! Your polling location is
{{VOTING-LOCATION}}
. Polls are open from 7am-8pm."

What the recipient sees: "Hi Edward, don't forget to vote on Tuesday 11/3! Your polling location is Franklin Middle School (123 Main St). Polls are open from 7am-8pm."
